The Pinstripe Suit

The Pinstripe Suit

I can’t go a week on Instagram without posting a picture of a beautiful blue pinstripe suit. I don’t know of a better piece of art. The blue/navy colour is usually a nice bold colour, a colour that exudes confidence. The pin stripe up until recent years was only worn in the financial sectors and was pretty much unheard of outside of work. Usually associated to some cocky broker in wall street with a blue pinstripe suit who beats his chest and makes bird sounds (wolf of wall street) – the suit has come a long way from there.

History Of The PinStripe

Clark gable in a Pinstripe Suit

Wall street is not where it all begun for the pinstripe suit. If you’re into old films then you’ll probably know the very dapper chap shown above. Clarke Gable was well-known for rocking some very dapper pinstripe suits in the 1940’s. He definitely didn’t start the trend though, it’s even older, the beautiful design actually originates from uniform in the early 1900’s.

Today bankers are proud of the corruption they create around the world and back in 1910 it was no different. Bankers wanted to show who they worked for but didn’t want to ruin their gentlemanly look. Since 99.99% of men wore long overcoats and a hat everywhere they went, tailors came up with a way to show off which firm the bankers worked for by giving each firm its own design in striped trousers. Some had super thin pinstripes while others had thicker chalk stripes on their trousers, spaced out differently. The pinstripe stayed exclusively in the world of finance until a few years ago.

I remember when I was about nine years old, my dad showed me his black pin stripe suit and said to me, you see this suit son, the stripes on it means the suit is expensive. Oh how times have changed now and thankfully dressing well is a lot cheaper than it used to be.

Pin Stripe & Chalk Stripe

Some may argue and say, there is a massive difference between pinstripe and chalk-stripe, I agree and disagree. The vast majority of fashion Bloggers and Instagrammers actually don’t correctly know the difference between the two and they often describe them based on the width of the stripe. This is actually wrong, pinstripe and chalk-stripe can both be the same width. The real difference is very minor, with a pinstripe, the stripe is dotted downwards while a chalk-stripe is dragged downwards looking a lot like a rope.

However no one follows that nowadays, and the difference has been simplified. As implied by the name, on a pinstripe suit, the stripes are as thin as a pin and on a chalk-stripe suit, the stripes are thick and wide like chalk.

Work & Occasions

Once you pick yourself up a really good pinstripe suit, it can become a bit of a challenge choosing when to wear it. Thankfully there are a few guidelines and basic principles that you can apply to your suit to tell you exactly when to wear it.

Suit Colour

The colour of your suit is incredibly important when choosing where to wear it. The darker the suit, the more appropriate it is for work, the lighter the suit the more suitable it is for an occasion or to be worn casually. If you consider the suit to be “blue”, I’d say wear it outside of working hours, when you go out to eat with the Mrs or go to an awards ceremony. You will stand out for all the right reasons and trust me, the compliments will roll in. If you consider the suit “Navy” then rock that bad boy to work with a white pocket square and enjoy looking better than your boss. The worlds your oyster in a quality striped suit.

Stripe Width

The style of the stripes that flow down the fabric is equally as important as the shade of blue. There are two types of stripes; the thick stripes and the thin stripes. It’s very self-explanatory but it’s essential to understand. The thicker the stripe, the more casual the suit becomes and likewise the thinner the stripe the more professional the suit will appear.

THE WOLF OF WALL STREET

Remember

Ultimately it’s down to your style how you wear a pinstripe/chalk-stripe suit, there are so many factors that determine whether it’s a casual outfit or a professional working one. Things like, double-breasted blazers, trainers, accessories, tie/no tie, all these things will play the biggest part. By rule of thumb, wear thick striped suits casually or at events and pinstripe suits to work and other formal meetings.

Moss Bros Summer Suits Sale

moss bros summer suit

I try not to be one of those bloggers that just writes about a bunch of stuff that I don’t like just for the sake of “content.” This can result sometimes in me going through websites and just thinking; “blah – I hate all this stuff.” For that I do apologise for not writing as much as I normally do. Thankfully Moss Bros came to the rescue with some really nice suits at a really decent price.

Moss Bros is one of those companies that seem to always have a sale, which can get a little annoying because I usually can not be bothered to flick through the racks in store or search through the online catalog. Especially because most of the time you find the perfect suit colour, style and fabric but then they don’t have it in your size. Thankfully I did manage to find four suits I would definitely own and wear regularly, one I’m actually buying.

I don’t really agree with owning “summer suits” just because in UK, its only really summer a couple days a year. If you don’t believe me it’s rained twice this week and it’s now 8th of July. Although you could certainly wear all four of these suits throughout summer pretty much anywhere in the world, I would not label them as summer suits. They are all season suits which is great for us normal lads that can’t afford to own fifteen different suits.

Moss 1851 – Tailored

Each suit is from the Moss 1851 Tailored Fit collection, which probably doesn’t mean much to you but I’ll shed some light on it. Negatives first; each of the suits come with a fixed size trouser waist which is based on the size jacket you select. Generally waist is six inches smaller than our chest and that’s how they work it out. If you are oddly shaped like me then you can get the trousers tailored or it might be best to opt for their mix and match suits.

Please also note that although I normally post slim fit suits, these are tailored fit meaning they will be a bit more loose fitting. I think as I’m getting older, I’m slowly moving away from tight fitted suits and more into a nice tailored cut.

Wrong Size – Returns

Moss Bros are quite good in regards to returns, I’ve returned and swapped a few things before and they never have any problems. There are two return policies, one 28 day return period for any non-sale item and you can return it for any reason, even if you don’t like it.

Their second policy is a 14 days return policy on all sale items. This is perfect and something I use often. I buy something even if it’s a bit of a gamble and then if it doesn’t fit, go into the store and get them to order me another one in a size up/down and get that delivered to my house or if they have one in store, even better.

Slaters Menswear – Two New Ties

Slaters above the ankles fashion blog

I was out shopping on the bank holiday just gone, it didn’t go very well, I was looking for some loafers and couldn’t find anything decent enough. I found myself in Moss Bros glancing at some ties and I asked the saleswoman if any of the ties were polyester. She looked at me a bit confused and then her manager recommended I have a look at Slaters. Thankfully I did and I’m now the proud owner a beautifully made light blue tie, which damaged my bank account by a whopping £5. I now have another pink paisley tie on the way.

If you don’t know much about Slaters, they are a nationwide menswear store which is run by the Slater family. The unique thing about them is each of their stores actually have tailors and offer free alterations on most of the stuff they sell. I actually used to call them the “backstreet shop” as they only have their stores on side-roads and back-streets. Here’s a snippet from their site;

Can we let you into a little secret? We don’t have main High Street stores. There, we’ve finally
said it. There is a good reason to this decision – we don’t want to pay extortionate rents and then
have to pass on the costs to our customers

In the middle of writing this post my pink tie arrived in the post and I was quite excited. I do feel like I bought two fantastic ties for only £10. These are my first two purchases from Slaters ever so I can’t comment much over the rest of their products. However, I’m very happy with the company and definitely will be ordering again so I’ll be sure to keep you guys updated.

Get The Look – #6 Suit & Trainers

Get The Look – #6 Suits & Trainers

This week I wanted to do something more casual but still very classy, while also being very easy to copy and alter to fit your style. Most of us wouldn’t actually have to go out and buy anything to create this look as we all own a suit, a hoody and trainers. The look itself is simple, it is combined of a very slim grey hoody designed for warmer months, a decent light blue suit, a dark blue pocket square, a watch, some shades and a pair of crisp white trainers. Sounds simple right? Absolutely!

The Look – Suits & Trainers

The Hoody

The hoody in this look is actually the most important part of this outfit, even more important than the suit. The reason why the hoody is so important is because it really dictates how people see the outfit. If you use a thick hoody with a logo then the outfit will look cheap and actually quite “gangster boy gone to court.” Keep the hoody thin, use a light colour and the hoody will fit nicely under your suit.

The Suit

The suit is a slim fit suit made from linen, which is perfect for all those hot summer days. I would suggest wearing one of your bigger suits so you can move around comfortably (also why wearing a thin hoody is important.) The suit in this look has beautiful wide lapels, 2 buttons for fastening the jacket and the trousers are cuffed (rolled up.)

The Pocket Square

Pocket squares are fantastic always and in this outfit they are no different. Simply add any colour pocket square you want to this outfit and it will fit, here’s a few I like from Moss Bros.

The Trainers

Without a doubt, the item I love in this look are the trainers. For summer, we all should own crisp white trainers that just reflect the light into everyone’s eyes and make us look fantastic. You have so many options when it comes to white trainers but I would keep it as simple as possible. My favourite is definitely Vans.

Shades & Watch

For the shades and watch, I don’t actually want to recommend anything for you guys. These two things are not important to the outfit and what you choose to wear is completely down to personal taste.

Let me know how you get on with this look and let me know what you think below in the comments.

FCUK – Powder Blue

powder blue suit fcuk cover

We all know FCUK, they were particularly big 10 years ago when everyone was wearing their white branded t-shirts. Now they have lost their hype amongst most of us but still remain a very popular brand in the world of fashion. I’m not the biggest fan of the brand, they are more expensive than Topman & Zara but to be fair to FCUK, they are definitely a band above most retailers in terms of quality. I’m not really a fan of the whole controversial branding variation of “f***”.

Branding name aside, have you ever tried on a french connection suit? They feel great. This powder blue suit is exactly what you would expect from a £250 purchase. Its comfy, the fabric breathes and is quite flexible. The annoying thing about french connection is most of their suit blazers are paired with trousers, meaning you don’t get to pick your size. What happens is; you pick your blazer size and they automatically give you a trouser size six inches smaller than your jacket size.

Aside from the annoying picking of trousers I can’t fault the FCUK Powder Blue Suit. Three piece suits are fantastic for dressing up or dressing down and can be worn in so many variations. Made from a mixture of wool and polyester the suit shouldn’t be too hot during the summer, while also keeping you warm during the winter months. Obviously tweed and cotton would be better for winter & summer respectively.

Pair this with a plain t shirt or jumper for a casual look and a dress shirt and tie for a perfect formal look.

Uniqlo Extra Fine Merino V-Neck Jumper

Although the weathers heating up its not exactly leave your jacket at home kind of weather and I find spring is generally the best times to buy winter things like jumpers & coats, as they are always cheapest coming up to summer. If you go shopping in london often then you definitely know Uniqlo, mostly popular in the asian countries but have grown massively in recent years. Generally known for their lightweight clothes and rainbow like colours. Sounds like a great company, it is, I bought a jumper from them 4 years ago and still wear it often these days and hasn’t lost it’s colour or shape, unlike my Zara jumper I bought for double the price two months ago.

MEN Extra Fine Merino V-Neck Sweater cover 2
Jumper Under Your Suit.

Wearing jumpers is a fantastic way to look dapper and add a layer onto your outfit. They can be worn under your suit or over a t shirt with some dark jeans, great for smart & smart/casual outfits. This Uniqlo jumper is actually fantastic, made from 100% fine merino wool, which may not sound that nice as the wool we think of is the itchy one people wear on TV. This wool is really fine, compact and really thin making it feel exactly like a cotton jumper except when you stretch the fabric it will bounce back into shape unlike cotton ones which just stay stretched out. The jumper feels soft inside and out so feel free to give your belly a rub after lunch.

The V-neck neckline allows you to wear this over a shirt with a tie on without the jumper covering your beautiful windsor knot you spent 5 minutes getting perfect in the morning.

Priced at £24.90, ranging in sizes from XS to XXL and in every colour under the rainbow, you really can not fault this wonderful jumper. I would definitely recommend grabbing a few while you’re at it.

Slim Fit Double Breasted Jacket By Antony Morato

Slim Fit Double Breasted Jacket In Blended Viscose

It was only a few months back that I discovered Antony Morato and it turns out that not many people actually know about this wonderful brand based in Italy. So considering its summer time and everyone keeps asking me where they can buy a quality double breasted suit from I figured I’d show you one of my favourite blazers from Antony MoratoThe Double Breasted Jacket In Blended Viscose.

The Double Breasted Jacket In Blended Viscose.

The reason why this suit is my favourite is due to that it is notably a simplistic and well crafted suit. I am not a fan of over exuberant outfits for myself although I love them on other people. This suit is designed with fantastic italian tailoring and look top dog – good job to Antony Morato. The material used is a blend between polyester & viscose, which is not a top quality material but will last you a couple years. The viscose material will give the suit a slight shine to it making it look more expensive than it is.

The sizing with the suits designed by Antony Morato are done in EU sizes so please check this size guide before you order yours. Even though there is free returns you don’t want to be sending things back and forth.

antony morato size guide

The double breasted design is perfect for work or play and can be worn either as a full suit or with some chinos/dark jeans. If you don’t already own a double breasted suit then this is definitely a great starter to your wardrobe. The blazer will set you back £149.90 with the trousers adding £69.90 on top of that, totalling £219.80.

Moss London Slim Fit Sky Blue Linen Suit

Moss London Slim Fit Sky Blue Linen Jacket

With the weather heating up and people walking around in t shirts its only befitting that now all the bright colours are coming out. In line with that I wanted to show you guys a classy summer suit you could wear pretty much anywhere from work, to the beach to a wedding.

Moss London Slim Fit Sky Blue Suit

The Moss London Slim Fit Sky Blue Suit is made from mostly from Linen mixed with polyester which is perfect for summer, it’s nice a light and breathable so you won’t be sweating buckets, at least not because of your suit. Due to the notched lapels, the suit would more suit a day out or an event rather than work but then I guess it depends what you work as and how casual work is. If everyone at work wears a suit and tie, then this isn’t the suit you want to wear to work, you’ll look far too laid back.

To add to that smart-casual look, the blazer has one button fastening, which looks great. If you paired this with a nice crisp white t-shirt during the day and then put on your spanking white dress shirt at night, you literally have the perfect summer outfit.

Moss isn’t known to be as expensive as other retailers and this suit fits well to that reputation, priced at £139.00 it is part of the lower end suits in high street retailers – although you probably couldn’t tell it was under £150.00.

Should You Grab This?

If you have winter suits, summer suits and all year round suits, then yes you have enough suits and this one will fit nicely into your collection. However, if you get by with 2-3 suits, then I wouldn’t advise this bad boy, summer suits are great but only last a couple of months.

Polo Ralph Lauren – Pack Of Three Socks

Polo Ralph Lauren - Pack Of Three Socks

So I’m at home thinking should I go into town and do some shopping on this lovely bank holiday monday or should I have a look online first and then go out shopping. So naturally I decide to have a look online for some ralph lauren socks. After scrolling through google’s shopping list I noticed these three pretty standard Ralph Lauren socks. I was really phased until I noticed they were only £21. I had a feeling there would be some stupid delivery charge and I was right, then as I changed tab, a promo box popped up offering me free delivery. (The code saved me £4.90.)

So long story short, I am now waiting for three Ralph Lauren socks to appear in the post in the next few days. Being the nice guy that I am, here’s the link to MenLook website where you can grab these as well;
