Men’s Business Attire – How To Dress

menswork wear

What is the most appropriate men’s business attire? Great question, here’s a better one;

What Is Business Attire?

Deciding what to wear to work can be difficult sometimes. Every workplace operates slightly differently, while some employers want top-notch fashion savvy employees while other employers would rather you come to work in jeans.

You can broadly put each type of business in two categories.

Two Types Of Workplaces

Formal

mens business attire

These types of workplaces are the most common, a place where employees should wear a two piece suit and a dress shirt. Some employers want a tie worn at all times, some don’t mind without the tie and some don’t even mind if you leave your blazer at home.

Formal attire is very restricting, your trousers must match your blazer. Your tie must be a sensible width and length. There are many rules when it comes to dressing formally, and this is to be expected since most of the multinational companies operate based on a set of strict rules and regulations. As long as you fit somewhere between a three-piece suit & tie and dress shoes/shirt and two piece suit – you’ll be sound.

My whole working life I’ve worked in environments where the tie has been a mandatory thing but I was still free to express myself with wild socks and lavish pocket squares. Now for the first time I no longer work in this environment. I work in a very small office now which has meant that the rules of business attire have flipped a bit.

Smart/Casual

mens casual business attire

Smart/casual work environments range from t-shirts/jeans (Mark Zuckerberg) to the combination of a dress shirt and trousers. Many workplaces that allow casual dress code will expect their workforce to still look smart. While formal business attire is quite rigid, casual business attire has much more freedom.

The great thing about dressing casual is the freedom to express yourself and really go all out. You can wear a bunch of accessories and crazy shoes with funky socks. It’s all good as long as you keep the bare essentials.

If you don’t have to wear a dress shirt to work then keep your t-shirts and jumpers logo/picture free. Do not come into work with a picture of a half-naked (or even naked) woman on your top or some slogan which involves a bad word. If you do, you may find yourself being sent home to change or asked embarrassingly to take it off.

If dress shirts are compulsory, then keep your shirt freshly ironed, wear good quality shirts from somewhere like TM Lewin or Hawes & Curtis. Wear good trousers and don’t slack and wear jeans every time you can’t be asked to iron. Grab some comfortable chinos from Zara for £30, trust me they will do you wonders. If you can get away with trainers you may as well but make sure they’re black or as close to black as possible and not high-tops.

Currently my boss has me in limbo, when I started I was wearing a suit, dress shirt and shoes with no tie. Now I’ve left the blazer at home, ditched the shoes and wear plain black vans and a cotton jumper over my dress shirt. I look slightly confused but I’m super comfy and I fit right in with my colleagues.

Matching Your Boss

So you think it’s a good idea to buy a new suit and come in looking much better than your boss so then maybe he might think you’re serious about getting promoted? If your boss is a SHE, then it might work, if however your boss is an egocentric HE, it’s definitely a bad idea. You’re on his territory and showing him up is not a good idea. Judge your boss or manager and match them. If you want to look a bit better than them, go for it, but don’t over do it.

So What’s The Correct Business Attire?

Depends where you work. As a botch standard, stick to a two piece suit with minimal accessories and a tie that matches the width of your suit’s lapels. Wear the best shoes you own and hope for the best. Just remember, the first time you show up anywhere, it’s better be overdressed with a lavish pocket square bursting out your chest pocket than have a mickey mouse jumper on when everyone’s dressed like the cast of wolf of wall street.

TOP TIP: Look around and copy, don’t over do it & don’t blend in – balance is key.

There aren’t many people on Instagram better dressed than Davidson Petit-Frère. Combined with his partner, David runs his company; MusikaFrere. You only have to be on their site for three seconds to realize they have unique talents and following them on Instagram is a must. A lot of my style is influenced heavily by men I see online that have amazing fashion sense and David is one of them.

Get The Look #8 - MusikaFrere 2

I had a choice of many different outfits from David but ultimately the majority of his outfits are unique and will cost you quite a bit of cash to look that good. Plus you’d pretty much have to go to David in NYC to get them. Therefore I decided to opt for an outfit that is easily copyable but still looks amazing. The look I’ve picked is both smart and casual, while being perfect for both winter and spring. Should you buy this outfit, it’s pretty much an all time classic that you can wear all year round.

The Outfit

The outfit is extremely basic, starting with a black slim-fitted turtle neck, a wide lapeled burgundy blazer, slim fitted black trouser and a pair of plain black trainers. Simple right? Simplicity is always the best, especially if you can make it look natural – almost as if you got dressed in five minutes.

Where Would You Wear It?

Sometimes we find ourselves with an outfit that we are unable to wear often. Either it is too casual or it is too loud – which is annoying. Doubt you’ll have a problem with this one.

Wearing it on a night out is the obvious choice, whatever you choose to do with your night, the turtle-neck shows people you are willing to chill a little, while the blazer let’s people know you’re classy guy. Dinners are perfect for this kind of outfit, especially if you’re going out to eat at a decent place where you know others will be dressed smartly.

Any sort of event, ranging from a work-do or a sporting event to a family baby shower, this look will surely have the colleagues and family admiring you. Whether they say anything to you or not will depend on how often they see you well dressed. If you find that the event is too casual hang your blazer on a chair and show off the fitted turtle-neck.

Blazer

The blazer is an elegant burgundy colour, a nice dark dull colour. Not often do you compliment a dull colour, but with winter coming round, you don’t want to be wearing those bright colours. Dark colours are great for many reasons, whether it’s to create a serious/professional persona or to blend in and not stand out like a lollipop lady.

Turtle Neck

A good fitted turtle-neck can get you far in this world and is essential for a man with a thing for fashion. They can be worn in a range of different ways. The most common is as a casual/smart look, usually by the older gent. This is combined usually with chinos, a jacket and driving shoes – this is my favourite way of wearing them. Combining it with a suit jacket is the most stylish way, as seen in this look.

Trousers

David here has kept it simple, a slim fitted black pair of trousers. Whether the trousers are a chino or a dark pair of jeans it doesn’t matter much. For the smart/formal nights, I’d always opt for the chino. Zara do some amazing fantastic quality chinos for £40. On the more casual night out, I’d definitely go for jeans, especially if you’re likely to be jumping around or spilling things. If that’s the type of night you’re intending to have, I’d probably leave the blazer behind.

Trainers

I was surprised to see David wearing trainers, it’s not a common sight on his Instagram page. Both trainers and shoes work well with this look. Which one to wear, depends on the day/night you intend on having. As with the chinos/jeans, follow accordingly (jeans with trainers and chinos with shoes.)

Nike Team Training Mini Duffle Bag

Nike Team Training Mini Duffle Bag

I’m sitting down at my desk one morning just spinning around on my chair at work, bored as hell. Then I look up and see this small manly handbag with “NIKE” printed boldly on the back, it looked so neat and tidy – I wanted one. Went straight up to my colleague and asked him where he got it from. Unfortunately for him, he paid £25 for it.

Do I mind having the exact same bag as someone else at work? Nope. As long as I look good I’m happy.

He got it off Amazon and thankfully for me it was sold out. After some googling I managed to find a few different links. Good news, I ordered mine for a fraction of the price he paid – £18 from John Lewis.

Diversity

The obvious use is for the gym, it’s strangely big enough to carry my trainers, tracksuit, t-shirt and a bottle of water. It’s also small enough to hold comfortably hold my lunch box, shoes and book for those working days. One handy feature is that there is actually room to unzip one end of the bag and extend the bag by about 50%. This proves great for all those weekends away. However, let it be known, the bag loses all its s*x appeal when you extend it. Only use in emergencies.

Nike Team Training Mini Duffle Bag

Whether it’s the gym, work or a short break away – this quality Nike bag will do the job.

Appearance

When walking to the gym, I always hang it on my shoulder using the long strap. This keeps the look of the standard gym bag, which is neither good nor bad. However, when walking to work, I make it far more fashionable. The shoulder strap is removable, I tuck it away inside the bag and carry the bag in one hand using the soft holdall handles. Due to the compact size of the bag, all the weight is in one position and the bag holds shape fantastically well.

Price

How often do you find bags costing £18.00? – no brainer!

Conclusion

Gone are the days of me walking to work with my lunch in a shopping bag. I no longer have to walk to the gym with a half empty bag or carry some huge bag on holiday with me. This Nike bag is compact, functional and cheap. If only Adidas would create one similar (being the Adidas fan that I am.)

FCUK – Powder Blue

powder blue suit fcuk cover

We all know FCUK, they were particularly big 10 years ago when everyone was wearing their white branded t-shirts. Now they have lost their hype amongst most of us but still remain a very popular brand in the world of fashion. I’m not the biggest fan of the brand, they are more expensive than Topman & Zara but to be fair to FCUK, they are definitely a band above most retailers in terms of quality. I’m not really a fan of the whole controversial branding variation of “f***”.

Branding name aside, have you ever tried on a french connection suit? They feel great. This powder blue suit is exactly what you would expect from a £250 purchase. Its comfy, the fabric breathes and is quite flexible. The annoying thing about french connection is most of their suit blazers are paired with trousers, meaning you don’t get to pick your size. What happens is; you pick your blazer size and they automatically give you a trouser size six inches smaller than your jacket size.

Aside from the annoying picking of trousers I can’t fault the FCUK Powder Blue Suit. Three piece suits are fantastic for dressing up or dressing down and can be worn in so many variations. Made from a mixture of wool and polyester the suit shouldn’t be too hot during the summer, while also keeping you warm during the winter months. Obviously tweed and cotton would be better for winter & summer respectively.

Pair this with a plain t shirt or jumper for a casual look and a dress shirt and tie for a perfect formal look.

The Weekend Look – Jeans & Chino’s

difference-between-jeans-and-chinos2

Me and a suit are never far away from each other, I love wearing my suits on the weekend but as men we need different outfits. I only wear three outfits, gym, smart and smart/casual. My gym outfit is really basic – A Superdry hoody, tracksuit bottoms and Nike Roshe trainers. My smart outfits are what I wear to work pretty much everyday, all the suits and shirts I write posts about daily.

tie-and-dress-shirt-and-pocket-square-and-waistcoat-and-double-breasted-blazer-and-chinos-and-tassel-loafers-original-3259

Smart/casual is one that I actually don’t wear too often but strangely enough is probably my favourite type of outfit. The smart/casual look is perfect for all those occasions when you know no one else will be wearing a suit or you just want to be a bit more comfortable for the day. There are so many different options when going for a quality smart outfit, you can really add and mix up the outfit every single time you get dressed. The two main variables that are most important in your outfit are not what’s on top, it is what you wear around your legs.

Jeans Or Chinos

Choosing which one to wear is entirely down to personal preference, I personally prefer to wear jeans during colder weather and chinos during the warmer weather. Jeans are reliable, they last a lifetime and as long as you don’t gain or lose too much weight – it’s worth spending more money on quality jeans.

Chinos are fantastic for going out in the heat, you won’t get sweaty in them and your legs will be able to breathe nicely. They look great with a blazer and a shirt, while also fitting well with just a plain white t shirt. You can get chino’s for pretty cheap, however they won’t last you as long as jeans and lose their colour a lot quicker as well.

Levi’s

Whether you want to wear chinos or jeans, it really doesn’t matter, what should matter is the brand you wear. Levi’s are known all around the world for one thing – quality. Everyone loves levi’s, they last a long time, they look great and won’t look washed out. Levi’s aren’t expensive, you can get most for like £50-£80. If you don’t already own a pair of both chinos & jeans that look and feel amazing, then you need some Levi’s.

I picked out two from mainlinemenswear.co.uk, have a look;

Over Your Shirt & Under Your Suit – Ben Sherman

When it comes to wearing dressing smart and looking dapper, without a doubt you are going to need a few different pieces of clothing. It’s just not enough to have one £150 suit from M&S and a couple of ties. As humans we love change, how nice is it to see your girl change her hair colour? We love seeing different things and different styles, even if you own 5 suits but wear them all the same way people will get bored of your outfits. Here’s where jumpers come into play; people want to see that you can dress well with different styles. Jumpers can look amazing over a shirt with no tie and some dark jeans or they can be worn under your suit with your sharp shoes and perfect tie.

We know Ben Sherman, we expect quality from them and the Cotton V-Neck Jumper by Ben Sherman is one of my favourites. Finding a quality cotton jumper that won’t stretch or wear out is difficult nowadays, especially because you can easily buy a jumper from H&M for a tenner.

This jumper is made from a lightweight cotton, which will keep you cool in the summer and adds an extra layer to your outfit during the winter. The whole jumper has a ribbed hem and ribbed cuffs along with elbow patches made visible from stitching which contrasts the general stitching of the jumper.

V-neck jumpers are really not my thing, it doesn’t really suit my character, however with this jumper comboed with a shirt it looks great and even suits me. Whether you want to go for the casual weekend look or add to your work outfit, the Cotton V-Neck Jumper by Ben Sherman is perfect for you.
