Remove The Label

I can’t believe I’m actually writing about this one but it’s something I’ve seen a few times in my short life and I must say, it is annoying! Those temporary brand labels left on the sleeves of suits as if they are supposed to be permanently part of the suit. I’m going to guess most people do it out of ignorance.

I do however get how they make the mistake; they go to the store, grab themselves a bargain on a quality suit from a big brand and they want to show it off. Well there’s many ways to do that, they could take a picture of the inside label of the jacket so everyone knows they have an DKNY suit. Another option would be to tell everyone they come in contact with. Whatever way they choose I don’t mind but one way no-one should ever do, under any circumstance is leave that label on the jacket sleeve on.

The moment you get home with your new suit, remove all labels! Don’t think about it just do it. It’s cringy and really weird to leave it on. Unless of course you are planning on returning the suit and getting a full refund. Which is a bit weird, why buy the suit in the first place?

Next time you see someone with a label on their sleeve, let them know that it’s tacky, please.

Shake my head.

Slaters Menswear – Two New Ties

Slaters above the ankles fashion blog

I was out shopping on the bank holiday just gone, it didn’t go very well, I was looking for some loafers and couldn’t find anything decent enough. I found myself in Moss Bros glancing at some ties and I asked the saleswoman if any of the ties were polyester. She looked at me a bit confused and then her manager recommended I have a look at Slaters. Thankfully I did and I’m now the proud owner a beautifully made light blue tie, which damaged my bank account by a whopping £5. I now have another pink paisley tie on the way.

If you don’t know much about Slaters, they are a nationwide menswear store which is run by the Slater family. The unique thing about them is each of their stores actually have tailors and offer free alterations on most of the stuff they sell. I actually used to call them the “backstreet shop” as they only have their stores on side-roads and back-streets. Here’s a snippet from their site;

Can we let you into a little secret? We don’t have main High Street stores. There, we’ve finally
said it. There is a good reason to this decision – we don’t want to pay extortionate rents and then
have to pass on the costs to our customers

In the middle of writing this post my pink tie arrived in the post and I was quite excited. I do feel like I bought two fantastic ties for only £10. These are my first two purchases from Slaters ever so I can’t comment much over the rest of their products. However, I’m very happy with the company and definitely will be ordering again so I’ll be sure to keep you guys updated.

Get The Look – #6 Suit & Trainers

Get The Look – #6 Suits & Trainers

This week I wanted to do something more casual but still very classy, while also being very easy to copy and alter to fit your style. Most of us wouldn’t actually have to go out and buy anything to create this look as we all own a suit, a hoody and trainers. The look itself is simple, it is combined of a very slim grey hoody designed for warmer months, a decent light blue suit, a dark blue pocket square, a watch, some shades and a pair of crisp white trainers. Sounds simple right? Absolutely!

The Look – Suits & Trainers

The Hoody

The hoody in this look is actually the most important part of this outfit, even more important than the suit. The reason why the hoody is so important is because it really dictates how people see the outfit. If you use a thick hoody with a logo then the outfit will look cheap and actually quite “gangster boy gone to court.” Keep the hoody thin, use a light colour and the hoody will fit nicely under your suit.

The Suit

The suit is a slim fit suit made from linen, which is perfect for all those hot summer days. I would suggest wearing one of your bigger suits so you can move around comfortably (also why wearing a thin hoody is important.) The suit in this look has beautiful wide lapels, 2 buttons for fastening the jacket and the trousers are cuffed (rolled up.)

The Pocket Square

Pocket squares are fantastic always and in this outfit they are no different. Simply add any colour pocket square you want to this outfit and it will fit, here’s a few I like from Moss Bros.

The Trainers

Without a doubt, the item I love in this look are the trainers. For summer, we all should own crisp white trainers that just reflect the light into everyone’s eyes and make us look fantastic. You have so many options when it comes to white trainers but I would keep it as simple as possible. My favourite is definitely Vans.

Shades & Watch

For the shades and watch, I don’t actually want to recommend anything for you guys. These two things are not important to the outfit and what you choose to wear is completely down to personal taste.

Let me know how you get on with this look and let me know what you think below in the comments.

T-Shirt Under Your Shirt

v neck & suit

There are a million style tips you can start applying in order to make yourself look better. In my old job, we used to always say that if you could improve 50 things by 1% you are now 50% better off – true stuff! So who wears a t-shirt under their shirt? I definitely do. Living in the UK, its cold 300 days a year and the need to put on another layer is real.

The problem with wearing a t-shirt under your shirt is that if you don’t wear a tie, it can end up poking out of your shirt. I wear t-shirts outside which is fine if your casual but the moment you wear it under your dress shirt, your t-shirt automatically becomes underwear. Sounds weird but it’s true, whether man or woman, your underwear is to be as hidden as possible and if you want to be a man of class then this is completely necessary.

Having your t-shirt poking out under your dress shirt looks sloppy and is similar to a woman who bends over and shows off all her backside & her thong – not a good look! If you want to be known as a well dressed individual then hiding your undergarments is essential.

The easiest way to hide your t-shirt is to not wear one, but living in the UK between october and june would mean you would be pretty cold. The best option is to do what I do, wear a v-neck t-shirt. They aren’t expensive and it really depends how many times you go out in a shirt without a tie. I only leave the house without a tie twice a week so I only own about three or four v-neck t-shirts. I save all my crewneck t-shirts for the days I wear ties and you should do the same.

I’ve added two items to my shop in order to give you guys the perfect v-neck’s to be worn with your outfits to ensure you won’t end up looking sloppy.

How Often Should You Get A Haircut?

The answer that isn’t really an answer is; it depends on how long your hair is. To keep it simple follow this rule.

If your hair is short, you need a haircut once a month. If it’s medium length where you can actually gel your hair, then once every three months. Any long hair also needs to be cut every six months to a year.

If you follow this rule you will be alright. Now I got a question for you, are you ok with just being alright? I don’t want to be known as the guy who dresses alright. So what else do you need to do?

Between haircuts things will start to grow in different places depending on how hairy you are. For me, I have an M shape hairline and the back of my neck also gets really hairy. So every three to five days I pick up my cut throat blade (I recommend you get one) and I shave off the hair myself. Just because you got a haircut four days ago doesn’t mean you still look nice and neat now.

If you aren’t sure if you need to touch places up with a razor just ask a friend if your beard or your hairline looks messy. Staying on top of this five minute job will make people look at you like someone who just always looks great.

FCUK – Powder Blue

powder blue suit fcuk cover

We all know FCUK, they were particularly big 10 years ago when everyone was wearing their white branded t-shirts. Now they have lost their hype amongst most of us but still remain a very popular brand in the world of fashion. I’m not the biggest fan of the brand, they are more expensive than Topman & Zara but to be fair to FCUK, they are definitely a band above most retailers in terms of quality. I’m not really a fan of the whole controversial branding variation of “f***”.

Branding name aside, have you ever tried on a french connection suit? They feel great. This powder blue suit is exactly what you would expect from a £250 purchase. Its comfy, the fabric breathes and is quite flexible. The annoying thing about french connection is most of their suit blazers are paired with trousers, meaning you don’t get to pick your size. What happens is; you pick your blazer size and they automatically give you a trouser size six inches smaller than your jacket size.

Aside from the annoying picking of trousers I can’t fault the FCUK Powder Blue Suit. Three piece suits are fantastic for dressing up or dressing down and can be worn in so many variations. Made from a mixture of wool and polyester the suit shouldn’t be too hot during the summer, while also keeping you warm during the winter months. Obviously tweed and cotton would be better for winter & summer respectively.

Pair this with a plain t shirt or jumper for a casual look and a dress shirt and tie for a perfect formal look.

The Weekend Look – Jeans & Chino’s

difference-between-jeans-and-chinos2

Me and a suit are never far away from each other, I love wearing my suits on the weekend but as men we need different outfits. I only wear three outfits, gym, smart and smart/casual. My gym outfit is really basic – A Superdry hoody, tracksuit bottoms and Nike Roshe trainers. My smart outfits are what I wear to work pretty much everyday, all the suits and shirts I write posts about daily.

Smart/casual is one that I actually don’t wear too often but strangely enough is probably my favourite type of outfit. The smart/casual look is perfect for all those occasions when you know no one else will be wearing a suit or you just want to be a bit more comfortable for the day. There are so many different options when going for a quality smart outfit, you can really add and mix up the outfit every single time you get dressed. The two main variables that are most important in your outfit are not what’s on top, it is what you wear around your legs.

Jeans Or Chinos

Choosing which one to wear is entirely down to personal preference, I personally prefer to wear jeans during colder weather and chinos during the warmer weather. Jeans are reliable, they last a lifetime and as long as you don’t gain or lose too much weight – it’s worth spending more money on quality jeans.

Chinos are fantastic for going out in the heat, you won’t get sweaty in them and your legs will be able to breathe nicely. They look great with a blazer and a shirt, while also fitting well with just a plain white t shirt. You can get chino’s for pretty cheap, however they won’t last you as long as jeans and lose their colour a lot quicker as well.

Levi’s

Whether you want to wear chinos or jeans, it really doesn’t matter, what should matter is the brand you wear. Levi’s are known all around the world for one thing – quality. Everyone loves levi’s, they last a long time, they look great and won’t look washed out. Levi’s aren’t expensive, you can get most for like £50-£80. If you don’t already own a pair of both chinos & jeans that look and feel amazing, then you need some Levi’s.

I picked out two from mainlinemenswear.co.uk, have a look;

Shaving – The Old School Way

shaving the old school way cover photo large

Ever heard of Sweeney Todd? If you have then you know what this post is all about. If you haven’t then not to worry, it doesn’t really matter. So let’s get to it.

shaving the old school way cover photo

Last night I was getting ready for today and figured I’d shave, which by shave I mean shave my moustache and shape up my hair line to get rid of the weird bit of hair that grows on my forehead (I know right eww.) So I normally do all of this with my normal disposable razor but recently I’ve been reading up on how amazing these cut throat razor are and everyone says it’s what a true gentleman would use. So being the aspiring gentleman that I am I felt like I had to actually go and grab myself one and actually see what all the hype is really about.

Usually when it comes to old fashioned things, I just naturally hate all things old. Why? I don’t know really, I love technology and new things, to prove my love for technology I actually even own a smartwatch which I pretty much wear and use everyday. I was a little reluctant to use the blade and not to mention a little scared of slicing up my face. I bought one online for peanuts and decided to give it a try.

It came in the post a few days ago and I figured I’d attempt to shape up my hair line and trim my moustache. So as per usual, I washed my face and then I added all the shaving foam and prepared myself for the worst. Needless to say five minutes later, I had a beautifully shaped up hairline, and a perfectly thin moustache. Then a minute later I was pretty much covered in blood, my skin had like seven different cuts so I ended the night covered in vaseline over every cut. Yes it hurt like hell!

Do I regret doing it? No way, the shave is amazing, it actually removes all the hair and I have so much more control over the blade. It may have hurt last night but now I can’t feel a thing, none of the cuts are visible so it’s definitely a winning situation.

I absolutely advise grabbing yourself one, hopefully you won’t cut yourself as much as I did.

Uniqlo Extra Fine Merino V-Neck Jumper

Although the weathers heating up its not exactly leave your jacket at home kind of weather and I find spring is generally the best times to buy winter things like jumpers & coats, as they are always cheapest coming up to summer. If you go shopping in london often then you definitely know Uniqlo, mostly popular in the asian countries but have grown massively in recent years. Generally known for their lightweight clothes and rainbow like colours. Sounds like a great company, it is, I bought a jumper from them 4 years ago and still wear it often these days and hasn’t lost it’s colour or shape, unlike my Zara jumper I bought for double the price two months ago.

MEN Extra Fine Merino V-Neck Sweater cover 2
Jumper Under Your Suit.

Wearing jumpers is a fantastic way to look dapper and add a layer onto your outfit. They can be worn under your suit or over a t shirt with some dark jeans, great for smart & smart/casual outfits. This Uniqlo jumper is actually fantastic, made from 100% fine merino wool, which may not sound that nice as the wool we think of is the itchy one people wear on TV. This wool is really fine, compact and really thin making it feel exactly like a cotton jumper except when you stretch the fabric it will bounce back into shape unlike cotton ones which just stay stretched out. The jumper feels soft inside and out so feel free to give your belly a rub after lunch.

The V-neck neckline allows you to wear this over a shirt with a tie on without the jumper covering your beautiful windsor knot you spent 5 minutes getting perfect in the morning.

Priced at £24.90, ranging in sizes from XS to XXL and in every colour under the rainbow, you really can not fault this wonderful jumper. I would definitely recommend grabbing a few while you’re at it.

Slim Fit Double Breasted Jacket By Antony Morato

Slim Fit Double Breasted Jacket In Blended Viscose

It was only a few months back that I discovered Antony Morato and it turns out that not many people actually know about this wonderful brand based in Italy. So considering its summer time and everyone keeps asking me where they can buy a quality double breasted suit from I figured I’d show you one of my favourite blazers from Antony MoratoThe Double Breasted Jacket In Blended Viscose.

The Double Breasted Jacket In Blended Viscose.

The reason why this suit is my favourite is due to that it is notably a simplistic and well crafted suit. I am not a fan of over exuberant outfits for myself although I love them on other people. This suit is designed with fantastic italian tailoring and look top dog – good job to Antony Morato. The material used is a blend between polyester & viscose, which is not a top quality material but will last you a couple years. The viscose material will give the suit a slight shine to it making it look more expensive than it is.

The sizing with the suits designed by Antony Morato are done in EU sizes so please check this size guide before you order yours. Even though there is free returns you don’t want to be sending things back and forth.
